Gourmet magazine just released its list of the top 50 restaurants in America, and despite the many cards stacked against us–namely labor shortages, dodgy utilities, and a well-documented problem with vermin–New Orleans has two on the roll: Restaurant August (#22) and Herbsaint (#49). Now, neither of those wins huge points in my book, but still: not too shabby for a city that remained mostly under mandatory evacuation a year ago. I can spot a couple of larger cities that don’t even appear on the list once. We may not have a technology sector, we may not be a media hub, but lordamercy, we do know how to cook, n’est-ce pas?

P.S. In the hard copy of the magazine, they post the list from 2001, upon which New Orleans appears only one time (Galatoires at #24). Will somebody please cue up The Jeffersons theme song?
